The weather is heating up and we are ready to take on some new challenges this Spring. Here’s an overview of March and our new approach to goal setting.
OUR NEW APPROACH TO GOAL SETTING
When putting together this post in the past, we have done a very basic job of goal setting. We assess whether we “completed” the goal with a thumbs up or thumbs down and then list out three more goals for the future month. This monthly routine was making me feel more accountable but wasn’t exactly inspiring confidence or helping to motivate Jason and I.
A few weeks ago, I read a really interesting article about the psychology of goal setting called What if We Quit Setting Goals? (Seriously?). It was an eye-opening read that I immediately connected with. It explored the Pros and Cons of goals and how to better frame those objectives to make yourself more effective in achieving them. It’s worth reading the whole article but my biggest takeaway came from how we describe our goals. By creating an actionable item that details how exactly we can control and achieve our goals, then we can focus more on doing and less on “is it done?” Basically once we start with our goal, we’ll think about what success would look like and how we think we can get there. Within our monthly posts, we are going to try creating a specific actionable item to go with each goal we set. Hopefully, this will help us direct our efforts towards making the right kind of progress.
STEP OUTSIDE MY COMFORT ZONE:
I only made it to one little networking event last month but I think that definitely counts as progress! It certainly made me feel a bit more confident about putting myself out there.
GET BACK INTO MEAL PLANNING:
I didn’t do this every week but I am getting back into the groove. I’m getting more efficient every week.
GET A HANDLE ON MY TO-DO LIST:
Honestly, I never thought I’d hear myself say this but I’m really proud of where my to-do list is at. For once, it is really well organized and I am feeling more at ease with how to approach it every day.
WORK ON BLOG GRAPHICS
Action: Create 5 Pinterest graphics for old Also Coffee posts and finish blogathon graphics for May/June themes for FTS.
This is a very specific number and action so I hope that it will motivate me to tackle the goal in a way in which I feel accomplished.
SCHEDULE SOCIAL MEDIA
Action: Schedule social media postings for at least 3 times a week for the next 4 weeks.
This includes work for my other blog as well. I really want to try out a new strategy I’ve been working on so that I don’t fall behind or feel too overwhelmed. Fingers crossed!
Action: Completely finish one DIY project from my list.
I am very close to finishing a few different projects so what I want to do is pick one to completely finish before starting the next one (seems like common sense but yeah…)
BIKE BIKE BIKE
Thanks to a soggy March, I wasn’t able to get out as much as I had hoped. Go figure, March was the month we finally got snow.
BUILD A SERVER CASE
Barring my over-confidence in my craftsmanship skills, I would say that this is a success. I wasn’t able to fully complete the project but now I have a much better idea on what the final product will look like.
Want to take a guess?…I suck. 🙁
Complete Server Case
Action: Finish construction and use the server case
So the server case I mentioned last month is just about done. I have taken it in a bit of a different direction than originally intended so hopefully it will wrap up this month.
Bike somewhere new
Action: Find a new trail head and explore
So I am finally back into biking (albeit maybe not as much as I wanted) and the shoulder is holding up. Now that confidence is coming back I want to go hit some new trails and explore some new areas!
Learn a new skill
Action: Take up lock picking
So I have been on a bit of a “learn a new skill” binge lately and figured why not take up lock picking. Its cool, practical and could be useful in a pinch. Next up: master thief!
JOINT GOALS: MARCH 2017
GET RID OF OUR JUNK!
We have still made strides in the department but in much smaller increments last month.
BOOK SOME TRIPS
We are starting to fall behind here. If we don’t get serious about planning we might never get anywhere!
One of the main reasons our last goal suffered was because we DID take the time to prioritize our needs. We took a few days and laid out a road map for future plans, including travels, and decided what was the most important thing to focus on first. We are in the mindset of “doing” and hopefully we are starting to make things happen.
GET RID OF OUR JUNK!
Action: Post items to Craigslist and make one trip to the dump.
So we are going to keep this on here in hope that our actionable item will be very attainable and make us feel accomplished even if we don’t get rid of ALL of the junk by the end of April.
BOOK SOME TRIPS
Action: Decide on dates for trips to be taken within the next 3 months.
We have one trip at the end of the year that we know we are taking and a good idea on when we need to book it. We have talked about a number of other trips we want to take throughout the year but haven’t really looked at a calendar. We have to get all of those ideas out and look at what we need to focus on for the next few months.
RESTART HOME SEARCH
Action: Meet with realtor and schedule new showings.
So this is happening again. We have a few big plans for housing this year but it all starts with our home search.
