Fantastic Spots for Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA

Posted on August 4, 2016 by Lindsay

Atlanta is a city full of culture, hospitality and amazing restaurants. During our time in the city, we were able to visit a lot of great places, but I still found myself wanting to check out a something new on every walk around town. Here’s an overview of the places we visited – a collection of fantastic options for food and drinks in Atlanta.

We’ve already covered two amazing markets in town (Krog Street + Ponce City) and detailed a list of things to do while in Atlanta. In this post, I’ll be breaking down some food options by occasion. Keep an eye out for a post on Atlanta “sweet treat” stops coming soon.

RISE & SHINE

Can’t we all just get on the same page and agree that breakfast food is the best? I’m a little suspicious of people who don’t enjoy breakfast food. For me, it’s usually a must to find good spots in whatever city I’m visiting. Here’s where to go in Atlanta:

THE FLYING BISCUIT – Multiple Locations

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-05

The best breakfast in Atlanta. This place had a long wait but it was easy to see why. What the tiny shop lacked in space it made up for in flavor. And the biscuits? They did not disappoint. The Flying Biscuit is actually a chain restaurant, so if you ever find yourself in Georgia, Florida or North Carolina make sure to give them a try!

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-03

AMELIE’S FRENCH BAKERY – 840 Marietta St. NW

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-07

This is the place to go for a small sweet and a coffee. The French bakery whips up anything from macarons to build your own breakfast sandwiches (on croissants!) The space is also very relaxed full of people catching up on reading and friends. You can take a look at the Google walk through below!

SUBLIME DOUGHNUTS – Multiple Locations

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-13
SO you KNEW this was coming right? Who would I be if I didn’t mention a donut shop. You can read all of my thoughts and see all of my pictures of Sublime Doughnuts by checking out this post here.

WEST EGG CAFE – 1100 Howell Mill Rd

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-22
Looking for something legit? Then you definitely should check out West Egg. Simple, minimalist decor surrounds you and your tasty breakfast treats. You won’t be upset opting for one of their omelettes but don’t look past the waffle options either.

STAR PROVISIONS – 1198 Howell Mill Rd NW

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-25

This coffee shop and unique eatery sells everything from breakfast entrees to kitchen utensils. Read all about our thoughts on Star Provisions and the Westside Provisions District in this Coffee Break post.

HEART-ATTACK LEVEL DELICIOUS

So if I have one complaint about the food in Atlanta, it’s that all of the food there seems like it was designed to kill me. Not in a “Scary, I don’t like that” sorta way but in a “If this is how I go I’m glad I died happy” sorta way. If you’re doing a lot of walking around Atlanta, be prepared to handle the hilly streets after eating your body weight in fried chicken. Here’s where you should go to clog your arteries:

MARY MACS TEA ROOM – 224 Ponce De Leon Ave NE

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-08
If you’re in Atlanta and want fried chicken, then you’re either going to Gladys Knight & Ron’s Chicken and Waffles (we didn’t have time to go here which reminds me, I need to book another trip to Atlanta) or you’re going to Mary Mac’s. The place is a Southern cooking staple of the city that will leave you full and satisfied. The menu is perfect for first-timers offering a lot of options to mix and match and the staff is super friendly.

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-09

THE VARSITY – 61 North Avenue NW

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-14
The Varsity is “The World’s Largest Drive-in” that serves up hot and dirty fast food to hoards of crowds every day. This place was packed when we got there. The food is simple – burgers, chili dogs, fries – but has anyone ever complained about a basic but delicious food? This isn’t a place you’d want to go to on the regular but it should be your first stop if you’re nursing a hangover.

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-15

FOX BROS BBQ – 1238 DeKalb Ave NE

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-20
There are a lot of BBQ options in ATL and if the rest of the bunch are half as good as Fox Bros then I think you’ll be happy. This place is a pretty standard BBQ affair with a no frills environment and a serious love of meat. Mmmm, so good.

GRINDHOUSE KILLER BURGERS – ATL airport

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-26
Another dirty burger joint on the list, don’t hesitate to pick up a Grindhouse Burger if you’re stranded in the Atlanta airport BECAUSE SPIRIT AIRLINES IS AWFUL AND THE WORST AND I WILL NEVER USE THEM AGAIN AND I LITERALLY HATE THEM.

I’m sorry, I blacked out there for a minute. Where was I? Oh right, I need a drink.

GET YOUR DRINK ON

Atlanta also has a ton of great options in their bar scene. We only had time to visit a few places so here are my favorites:

THE BOOKHOUSE PUB – 1198 Howell Mill Rd NW

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-01
We found our way to Bookhouse on our first night in town because it was close to our Airbnb and had good Google reviews. Little did we know that we we’re walking into a very chill bar with Twin Peaks inspired drinks and decor! This greatly amused us Twin Peaks fans and we probably drank more than we needed to that night.

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-02

PROOF & PROVISION – 659 Peachtree St NE

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-11
This old school cool basement bar is located below the historic Georgian Terrace Hotel. It has a great vibe and fine craft cocktails that would make it the perfect place to have a drink with friends or cuddle up next to someone special.

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-12

THE PORTER BEER BAR – 1156 Euclid Avenue

Food and Drinks in Atlanta GA-21
Last on my list was my favorite bar we visited in the Little 5 Points district. Porter’s had an amazing selection of beers & ciders with over 800 options! We spent most of the night in this bar discussing unsolved murder cases because if you haven’t figured it out yet we are TOTAL WEIRDOS. But seriously, check out this bar.

All the biscuits in this post are making my mouth water! This post came at a perfect time – my cousins just moved from LA to Atlanta and I’m sure they’re looking for some great restaurants!

We have never been to Atlanta and if I’m being honest, we know absolutely nothing about it. But after reading this post, we can’t wait to go! Drinks wise it would be Porters (because that’s the name of a great pub in the city we met/got married in) and Proof & Provision, because who doesn’t want to go for a drink somewhere that it looks like you’re entering a dungeon! And if you ask my better looking half, she would agree that breakfast is the best meal of the day. Great post! Love C and D x

Porter’s was very much the kind of bar I’d frequent if I lived there. Proof & Provision is a bit fancier.

      & Yes! Breakfast!!

So clearly, we need to get out more when we visit the ATL, though we have managed to hit up the Varsity (I mean, you have to, right?) and Proof & Provisions. Fox Bros is calling us for next time! Gladys Knight’s place is fab, btw. πŸ™‚ Thanks for the great spots to find!
