There is a backlog of Recap posts currently burning a hole in my “Drafts” bin. It’s cool though, because that just means I get to relive the Summer months again. And speaking of Summer, this post is a recap of a day trip to Hart-Miller Island in Essex, Maryland.
Initially, Jason and I planned to camp at the island overnight (they have free beach camping!!) We had everything packed up but on the morning of we overslept a bit. THEN we started to get nervous about Ellie’s first canoe ride. Eventually, we decided instead to make it a day trip to Hart-Miller Island.
We took our time and loaded up the canoe. It’s about a 6 mile trip to the island from my parents house so starting early in the morning really helped us out on the water. We didn’t come across any major waves and Ellie didn’t jump out ONCE.
It felt so good to finally make it to the beach.
The island was pretty calm that early in the morning so once we pulled up our canoe, Ellie was able to run and play along the shore.
Ellie’s summer motto is “RUN, SWIM, SAND, REPEAT.”
There was a nice little cove off to the one side of the shore that we really liked exploring. The rocks helped to separate it from the rest of the crowds.
Around midday, more boats and people start to populate the island.
As more people arrived, we headed to the mainland. Hart-Miller Island has free bike rentals so you can grab a beach cruiser and explore. It was a easy ride that provided us with some great views of the water.
After the hot & sweaty bike ride, we spent some more time swimming at the beach. Before it could get too dark, we decided to pack it in and head back.
If you plan to camp or take a day trip to Hart-Miller Island, try launching off from the nearby Rocky Point Beach. And of course, stay safe, hydrated and always wear your life vest!
Have you ever been to Hart-Miller Island?

I’ve also got a huge backlog of recaps to get through too, but you’re right it really does help to relive the summer months! It looks like y’all had the best time on your trip, but your pup looks like she was having the best time and it looks so happy! I love taking my pup on trips too!
Yeah, if she is having fun, chances are so are we. It’s been a blast trying new things with her this past summer.
Nothing better than a stroll at the beach – especially if you’ve got such a cute companion ๐
It really was such a nice day!
This is really cool! It is the first time I hear about this island (and I love learning about new ones). Seems like you had the place to yourselves. And, I am also guilty of having a backlog of recaps (mine go as far as last summer). Well, at least I have some good content ;0)
Hahah that’s what I tell myself too – like at least I have something to post about!
looks like a great place to spend some fun time in the sun, biking, canoeing, swimming happy dayz
