Last Summer Jason, Rob, Jess and I had a quick weekend adventure in Washington DC. Thanks to its close proximity to Baltimore, it takes no time at all to head down to DC and see the sights. Here’s an overview of our two days in the city.
SO you already know we had to knock off a donut spot first thing. We headed straight to Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken.
Jason picked up the old bay fried chicken donut sandwich. I tried out the famous crème brulee donut as well as a seasonal passion fruit.
We checked into our hotel and decided to head over to the Georgetown area. It’s a beautiful part of the city that totally charmed my pants off.
If you’re in Georgetown, you kind of HAVE to eat a cupcake (or twelve.) We stopped into Baked & Wired for the good stuff.
Then more exploring! I don’t usually go to the Georgetown area when I’m in DC but I loved just walking around and admiring the colorful townhouses.
And since we’re movie nerds, we had to stop by the famous stairs featured in The Exorcist. They are mighty steep.
We had a place in mind for dinner but that didn’t stop us from having one more coffee break at Dolcezza gelato shop.
We headed into the area we were planning to spend the evening and decided to peruse a few shops. Idle Time Books was a nice spot for browsing all matter of old books, pretentious staff aside.
Finally dinner. We needed real food and hot damn did Sakuramen Ramen Bar deliver. Some of the best Ramen I’ve ever had and their loaded buns? Unspeakably good.
We definitely needed to digest for a while before checking out any bars so we popped into another cool bookstore café – Kramerbooks and Afterwords.
Jason is so ready to move to Copenhagen.
Walking around as day turned to night, I started to realize just how hard I was falling for the beautiful DC architecture.
Time for a drink. First beer (or cider for me) from the Bavarian themed rooftop bar Biergarten Haus.
We spent the rest of the evening dancing the night away at Nellie’s Sports Bar.
Okay, okay, ONE last stop before bed. Bring it on Ben’s Chili Bowl. I’m sure I won’t regret the decision in the morning.
ON TO DAY TWO!
We headed over to Ted’s Bulletin for breakfast but the place was jam packed. We ended up taking some homemade pop tarts and iced coffee to go.
There are loads for really fantastic museums in the city, many of which I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. On this trip, we walked around the city and then up to the (free) Smithsonian’s National Zoo.
It was a hot day and all of the animals were in full-on lazy mode.
It was time for another coffee break so we headed out. Jason spotted the recently opened Philz Coffee (originally from San Francisco) and insisted we stop.
For lunch we popped into Julia’s Empanadas to experience pure empanada bliss.
How adorable is this Pear & Almond empanada?
After we had our fill, we decided to head back to Baltimore. Well not before grabbing one more coffee from the delightful Tryst coffeehouse.
DC is such an amazing city filled with delicious food and wonderful culture. It’s a great destination for a day trip but has plenty of fun to keep you occupied no matter how long your stay is.
