I guess this is a little embarrassing, but I’ve been working on putting out a capsule wardrobe post since last Summer! I suppose my closet will always feel like a work-in-progress but I’m finally organizing all of my thoughts on the process and hopefully offering up some useful tips for others looking to hop on the capsule wardrobe bandwagon.
If you ever thought about putting together a capsule wardrobe or just wondered what the hell it even is, I hope this helps!
WHAT IS A CAPSULE WARDROBE?
A capsule wardrobe is when you take all of the clothes in your closet and put them in a storage bin. Then you bury that bin deep in the earth with the intention of opening it in 100 years. I’m sorry, sarcasm probably isn’t best placed in a helpful tips post.
Anyway, a capsule wardrobe is a curated selection of clothing items. There is no hard and fast rule but the collection will usually consist of 30-50 pieces that includes clothing, outerwear, and shoes. Accessories, work out gear and other special occasion items do not usually factor into the capsule.
There are a number of ways to organize your capsule wardrobe but the main idea is to simplify the number of items down to versatile and important pieces. You should find out what works the best for you and cut through the clutter.
WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER IT?
For me personally, the idea of a capsule wardrobe was attractive for a few reasons. For starters, I was desperately trying to declutter my life. If you’ve ever lived in a small space with another human being that likes buying things from Amazon on a weekly basis, you know that it can be really tough to keep that space organized and clean. I’m especially bad at keeping up with laundry and clothing storage because, well I also have a lot of unnecessary shit.
Another great benefit of having a capsule wardrobe is that it makes packing SO much easier. I don’t wanna brag (but I’m gonna) but I’ve become a pretty great packer. I used to be that person with a giant suitcase and an outfit for every imaginary situation (what if I want to go to the beach and look cute but then there’s a severe rainstorm and it gets cold and…?) But when we went to Europe a few years ago, I knew that we would have to pack light thanks to the strict baggage allowances on the budget airlines. I learned how to pack light because (a) 3 weeks in a carry-on? challenge accepted (2) I can’t stand baggage claim and (3) I’m so so cheap.
Other than those perks, there are loads of other reasons to consider looking into a capsule wardrobe including:
- You will save money. Once you have a checklist of what clothing items you want for your wardrobe, it becomes a lot easier to say “No” to that 30th black dress.
- You will save time. Anyone else look through everything in your entire closet before deciding that the first thing you thought about wearing is probably your best bet? Yeah, forget all of that. Get rid of all the stuff you’ll probably never wear.
- You will save space. I guess this isn’t the biggest issue for some people but I find myself less stressed when I can easily locate and store all my stuff. Think of all the extra space you’ll have for activities.
See, doesn’t all that sound so nice? THINK ABOUT THE SAVINGS.
So, are you convinced yet? If you’re interesting in planning your own switch to a capsule wardrobe, be sure to check back later in the week for a step by step guide on how to start!
